Paul Harvey’s “If I Were the Devil,” Communism, and Following Jesus

In 1965, Paul Harvey’s essay “If I were the Devil” echoed a communist playbook outlined in Cleon Skousen’s “Naked Communist.” Both called for secularism in schools, the media, and the world. Both advocated pornography and the exploitation of young intellects. Both wanted to destroy the family, the church, and the belief in God. And both were written during the “sex, love, and rock and roll” hippie phase that followed the invention of birth control. Given the Godlessness in our world today, both seemed remarkably prescient. Yet they were also predictable outcomes of their prideful and evil source.

Today we live in a world that is more depraved than Sodom and Gomorrah. Since abortion was first legalized in the USSR in 1920, we’ve slaughtered millions upon millions of our preborn children. Millions of babies who do survive the womb are often brought into a chaotic world by unwed (yet very brave) mothers. Alongside the growth in secularism, feminism, agnosticism, and atheism are low birth rates and high anxiety and depression.

Even worse, Satan no longer hides himself. As with the demoniac in the New Testament, he emerges in nakedness and chaos. We see his work with the half-naked people on stage at halftime shows, celebrity events, and in the media. He’s behind the “My body, my choice” movement that sacrifices our youngest humans to him. He’s behind the unhinged, the morally corrupt, and the cruel. He’s thrilled to watch the rise of the “nones” in places such as the United States where apathy, laziness, and video games are too prevalent. The “nones” are people who do not identify with any religion or organized religion. These include atheists, agnostics, and Christians who rarely attend church.

What can we do to reverse these awful trends?

  1. Pray fervently for change.
  2. Encourage people to return to church.
  3. Encourage people to seek the truth.
  4. Encourage people to follow our objective moral laws in their consciences.
  5. Encourage people to love one another, marry, and have big Christian families.

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. If we all actively aligned ourselves with the truth, this world would be heaven. Everyone would love the Lord above all else and love our neighbors as ourselves. Rather than swimming within the currents of the devil, we should aim to swim against the currents as saints.
